The Joy of Thanksgiving

There are individuals who claim that celebrations of any kind are not to be a part of a Christian’s life. However, God commanded the Israelites to celebrate, at least seven times a year. He commanded them to celebrate the Passover, which looked forward to Jesus Christ’s death for us. We are thus to celebrate Resurrection Sunday which expresses our joy over the victory over death that Jesus accomplished.

We also find that God’s first act towards the human life that He made was to create the home, the union of man and woman. Then throughout the Old Testament we find His instruction to be faithful to “the wife of our youth.” When a couple is faithful for 40, 50, or 60 years then that, within God’s perimeters, calls for a celebration. Yes, celebration, and many moments in life call for celebration.

Another celebration that flows within God’s call for joyous occasions are the celebrations over the birth of a child. God commanded us to be fruitful and multiple, so when a new life enters the world, we are being obedient to God’s command, the first command given to us, and that deserves celebration.

In like manner, for every year we pass the anniversary of our birth, it is good to celebrate the living of life according to God’s desires for us. God wants His people to be joyous together, not grim and hateful. So celebrations aid our living out life, as God knew and thus commanded, so we are to go about celebrating in the joyous sharing of life lived in the guidance of the Father.

Likewise, to celebrate a feast of Thanksgiving is in accordance to God’s word. The Old Testament uses the word Ingathering instead of Thanksgiving but the meaning is clear: “…and the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you have gathered in the fruit of your labors from the field” (Exodus 23:16b). And a joyful spirit is to the foundation of that celebration: to celebrate… with gladness, both with thanksgivings and singing, with cymbals and stringed instruments and harps (Nehemiah 12:27). Now your kids will enjoy the cymbals!

So, celebrate the Feast of Thanksgiving and bathe in God’s blessings.
